A Clear & Comprehensive introduction to Complete Dentures

January 27th, 2014|
Dr Himakshu Vyas

Complete dentures can be either”immediate” or “conventional.” Conventional dentures are inserted in the mouth about eight to twelve weeks after the teeth have been removed just when the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has begun to heal.

Unlike conventional dentures, immediate dentures are the dentures which are made in advance and can be placed as soon as the teeth are removed. This will help wearer not to stay without teeth during the healing period. However, gums and bones shrink over the time, especially during the healing period following tooth extraction.

How Are Full Dentures Made?

It takes about three to six weeks and a few appointments with our dentist Townsville. Once our prosthodontist determines what type of appliance is suitable for you, the general further steps are to:

Create a series of impressions of your jaw and take several measurements of how your jaws relate to each other and how much space is between them.

Make models, wax forms, and plastic patterns in the right shape and position of the denture to be made. Our dentist tries in this model several times and the dentures will be assessed for shape, color and fit before the final piece is cast.

How Long Should I Wear The Full Dentures?

At the initial stage, you might be asked to use the dentures every time, including while you sleep. Although as a wearer you might not be comfortable for the time-being, it is the quickest and easiest way to determine that the dentures is a correct fit. During the initial stage, you may be instructed to remove the dentures at night, and in the morning.

Should I Wear A Denture Adhesive With My Full Denture?

Complete denturesare designed to fit precisely and doesn’t require the use of an adhesive for comfort. Denture adhesives are primarliy used in an emergency until you see the dentist at The Townsville Dental Centre, but prolonged use is not recommended as it may mask infections and cause bone loss in the jaw. Apart from this, dentures that fit poorly and causes constant irritation over the time will contribute to sores in the mouth area. If your dentures feel loose or cause discomfort, you should see our dentist Townsville immediately.
