A Guide to Cosmetic Dentistry: What Treatment is Right for Me?

November 18th, 2017|

Cosmetic dentistry has quickly become a popular option for patients looking to give their smile an upgrade. Many patients feel unhappy with their smile, hiding it in photos, avoiding outward, open laughter. Many are afraid that their teeth are too yellow, too crooked or have unwanted chips and cracks, which is why certain treatments have been created to help them with their features.

There are so many procedures to choose from now, with each treatment offering its own costs, specifications and finish. So, if you are interested in changing your smile, here are 5 cosmetic procedures that dentists offer, and what they involve.

Whitening

Whitening is probably the most popular form of cosmetic dentistry. Many patients are unhappy with the colour of their teeth, and while some people naturally will have discoloured teeth, a white smile can help how people feel about their smile. Whitening is ideal for patients who’ve found their teeth have stained from coffee, tea, red wine or simply aging.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are good for patients who have issues with broken, chipped or gapped teeth. These veneers bond to existing teeth and create a straighter, whiter looking tooth. Veneers are a long-lasting treatment, but they do require daily flossing and care. They are a more expensive choice, but they also don’t stain or lose their appearance over time.

Composite Veneers

These are a more affordable veneer over porcelain, with the only difference being that they are less durable, require more maintenance and last around 4-8 years instead of the 12-25 with porcelain.

Composite bonding

Composite bonding is a faster and less invasive option for those who want straighter teeth or who are looking to cover up chips and discolouration. The composite resin is shaped onto your teeth to give you a straighter tooth. This can also be completed in one appointment.

Dental Implants

This procedure is usually the choice for those who only want to address a single missing tooth. The dental implant includes a metal post that is screwed into your jawbone, and a tooth implant that is placed on top of it.

The best way to find out what cosmetic procedure is right for you is by speaking with your dentist or specialist. They will be able to advise you on a treatment that fits your budget and gives you the look that you’re after. Book an appointment with The Townsville Dentist to discuss with us your options.
