6 Ways To Defeat Your Fear Of The Dentist

November 8th, 2016|
Dr Himakshu Vyas

Anxiety around visiting the dentist and undergoing dental procedures can begin as early as childhood. Though these fears are usually largely irrational, they can go on to severely damage your oral hygiene and potentially lead to serious health complications. Overcome your dental anxiety today for infinitely better oral health.

  1. Don’t hide from the fear. The main error many people make when encountering dental anxiety is giving in to the fear and avoiding the anxiety altogether. You may ignore severe tooth pain and obvious dental problems, choosing to wait until your teeth are well past saving before finally making that appointment. Face your fears head on and the consequences are likely to be far less intimidating.
  2. Be open with your dentist. Dentists are medical professionals, and they are used to encountering patients with anxiety. Speak openly with your dentist about your fears and concerns – you may find that they’re easily able to put you at ease and make things more comfortable for you. There’s nothing to be ashamed of – many people struggle with this phobia, and your dentist will have solutions that can help you.
  3. Practice relaxation techniques. Sometimes, small but simple relaxation methods can make a huge difference to your anxiety levels. Practice deep breathing, counting your breaths, positive affirmations, and gradual muscle relaxation to relax both your mind and body.
  4. Ask about your medication options. Many dental procedures can be done under sedation or anaesthetic today, so ask what your options are before committing to a procedure – you may be able to sleep through the entire thing.
  5. Shop around. If your dentist doesn’t make you feel entirely comfortable, don’t be afraid to try different dentists until you find one that puts your fears to rest. There’s no reason to settle for less than the best. Again, this is the time to speak with the dentist about the anxiety you’re struggling with so that they can make the process as easy as possible for you. Building a solid foundation of trust with your dentist will go a long way to calming your nerves.
  6. Create a positive atmosphere. When you do go in for a dental procedure, there are ways to tune your surroundings out and create a more tranquil environment for you to relax in. Bring music and headphones in with you and create a relaxing play list that helps you calm down and distracts you. Do whatever you can to help yourself feel totally comfortable.
