Getting Your Kids Practicing Proper Oral Health

December 18th, 2017|

With their boundless energy, their love of all things sugary and sweet and their disposition to get in some pretty dangerous situations, maintaining proper oral health is all-the-more important. Children are much less inclined to waste their time on activities that they can’t see the benefit of, which is why it’s even more important to get your children seeing the plus side of flossing, blushing and keeping those pearly whites in great condition.

So how do we get stubborn children brushing? Here are our tips for getting your children regularly brushing, without you having to nag them.

The right brush for the job

If you want your child to be excited to brush their teeth, you’ve got to get them something that makes it fun! Let your child choose their own toothbrush, be it their favourite cartoon character or a colourful singing brush that plays their favourite song.

Answer their “why?”

What’s better than your child knowing exactly why they need to practice proper oral hygiene? Curb your children’s curiosity through videos, books and your own knowledge. Get them learning with at-home activities and allow them to understand on their own why they should be protecting their teeth.

Charts

Why not show your child’s progress through fun charts? It’s easy to create and a fun way for children to get motivated to continue brushing. Each morning and evening with happy, clean, brushed teeth equals one sticker, and after a certain amount, you can reward your child for their commitment!

Fun ways to brush

Make brushing a fun game! Welcome all kinds of activities and competitions and stick with it. Children are always eager to play, especially with their busy parents, so a couple minutes during the morning and night competing to brush the longest or make the most bubbles couldn’t hurt.

Lead by example

Nothing is more important than how your child is influenced. The way we act directly impacts how they choose to act, and it’s why it’s just as important to practice proper oral hygiene on your own. Why not brush your teeth together after dinner? This can also be a great way to show them the right method.

Even if your child is struggling to see the benefit of their oral hygiene, it’s important to stick to it. This will result in less costly fillings in the future, which your child is sure to be grateful for later. Be sure to contact your local dentist to book your child for regular dental check-ups.
