How to Buy the Right Toothpaste for You

July 6th, 2017|

With so many choices lining the shelves of every supermarket, determining which toothpaste is the right for you can be a confusing and time consuming process which ends with you simply choosing a random one off the shelf. But as something that is essential for maintaining good oral hygiene and a product that you will be using at least twice a day, it is important that you find one that is right for your needs.

Read on below to find out more about the different kinds of toothpaste how to find the perfect toothpaste for you!

Teeth whitening toothpaste

Teeth whitening toothpaste control the largest share of the market by far. Despite their name, they aren’t actually a whitening treatment for teeth — only bleaching agents can achieve that, which no teeth whitening toothpaste products contain. The goal of tooth whitening toothpaste is to remove stains, which achieves the appearance of whiter teeth.

Toothpaste for sensitive teeth

For those with sensitive teeth, the abrasives that regular toothpaste products contain may not be the best idea. Toothpastes for sensitive teeth are designed for teeth with thinning enamel or receding gums, as this leads to the exposure of porous dentine — home to many nerve endings.

Children’s toothpaste

It’s obvious what kind of people this toothpaste is for. One of the hardest tasks when it comes to being a parent is instilling in your children the discipline to brush their teeth every day and night. Many children’s toothpaste products come in delicious flavours and filled with pleasant colours and sparkles, enticing children to enjoy brushing their teeth rather than seeing it as a chore. Aside from the designs, you can rest assured that they are sugar free and not significantly different to regular toothpaste.

How do I buy the right one for me?

Although certain brand names, such as that of Colgate and Oral B, enjoy more popularity, most dentists will tell you that the most important thing is to ensure that the toothpaste contains the most important ingredient — fluoride. If you’re tossing up between multiple kinds of toothpaste with similar levels of fluoride, then the only other factor you really need to consider is price.
